Process Modeling Using Event-Driven Process Chains

چکیده
Event-Driven Process Chains (EPC) is a business process modeling language developed in a joint effort between SAP and the Institute of Information Systems of Saarbrücken in the context of the Architecture of Integrated Information Systems (ARIS) framework (Keller, Scheer, & Nüttgens, 1992). One of the initial purposes of EPC was to configure workflows in ERP software such as SAP R/3. As the language is aimed at regular users, it is designed to be intuitive and easy to understand, in contrast to more formal languages such as Petri nets which have a stronger focus on correctness (Aalst, 1999). No standardized procedure exists for producing EPC models, but Scheer, Thomas, and Adam (2005, pp. 136–137) describe a set of steps that help create EPC in a structured manner:

Formalization and verification of event-driven process chains
For many companies, business processes have become the focal point of attention. As a result, many tools have been developed for business process engineering and the actual deployment of business processes. Typical examples of these tools are BPR (Business Process Reengineering) tools, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems, and WFM (Worliflow Management) systems. Some of the leading produc...
متن کاملModelling Complex Events with Event-Driven Process Chains
The emerging technology complex event processing can be utilized to integrate complex events into business processes and to flexibly adjust processes on changing business requirements. Due to the complexity of events to be modelled, a high interaction level between users and developers is required. The lack of appropriate approaches for modelling complex events with the common conceptual modell...
متن کاملProcess Orientation and Object-Orientation — An Approach for Integrating UML and Event-Driven Process Chains (EPC)
Event-driven process chains (EPC) are used by many companies for modelling, analysing and redesigning business processes. The resulting EPC models are used as a starting point for the development of information systems and for the definition of workflows. They can be applied for simulation and activity based costing. A major area of application is the implementation of standard software package...

Towards Workflow Pattern Support of Event-Driven Process Chains (EPC)
The 20 workflow patterns proposed by van der Aalst et al. provide a comprehensive benchmark for comparing process modelling languages. In this paper, we present a workflow pattern analysis of Event-Driven Process Chains (EPCs) which is novel in its degree of detailing. Building on this analysis, we propose three extensions to EPCs in order to provide for workflow pattern support. These are the ...
